Even though the snow continues and summer seems a long way off, Mono Lake Committee staff are busy planning for the California Society for Ecological Restoration Annual Conference, which will be held in Mammoth Lakes, May 19–22, 2010. Plenary speakers will include David Nahai, former General Manager of Los Angeles Department of Water & Power and our Executive Director, Geoff McQuilkin. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to deepen your knowledge of restoration!

The Committee will be participating in the technical session “Environmental Advocacy: Developing Policy and Educational Outreach.” As part of this session we will share some of the details on how we are involved with State Water Board-ordered restoration of Mono Lake and its tributary streams. The Committee’s education programs are also a big part of the restoration work—getting kids out on the creeks planting trees and pulling invasive plants—and Education Director Bartshe Miller will provide those details.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then actually visiting some of the restoration sites on Rush Creek or paddling Mono Lake’s waters in a canoe will really help participants understand and feel the power of successful restoration. These field trips will be offered on Saturday, May 22.

Restoration at Mono Lake is quite a story on multiple levels—the battles, the agreements, the science, the partnerships, and the progress. So mark your calendars and plan to attend for the latest updates and information on restoration at Mono Lake, throughout the Eastern Sierra and statewide. See the conference website for conference information.
