On Thursday, September 9th we acknowledged another wonderful summer of volunteers in the Mono Basin! The party included volunteers’ anecdotes of memorable events during the summer, a BBQ and potluck, and a trivia contest. I loved hearing volunteers’ stories about a myriad of events: working the counter at the Visitor Center, pointing out birds with the spotting scope at County Park, talking about the ecology of the lake at Old Marina, and leading tours at South Tufa and Panum Crater, to name a few. The trivia contest was even more amazing—history, flora, fauna, and the politics of the lake—our volunteers have it covered! Thanks so much to Jean Dillingham for hosting such a wonderful evening, to Janet Carle for all of the countless hours spent training and organizing volunteers, and to all of the volunteers themselves for sharing the wonders of the Mono Basin with countless visitors.

This year, Rhonda Starr and Hank Garretson of Mammoth Lakes won the Volunteer of the Year Award. Thanks so much for all you do, Rhonda and Hank!
