Road Conditions
Road conditions can change quickly in the Mono Basin and the Eastern Sierra. Always check road conditions before you travel by visiting the website or calling 1-800-GAS-ROAD.

MOUNTAIN PASSES
• Tioga Pass (Highway 120 West): This road through Yosemite National Park is typically closed from the end of November until the end of May every year. Check the status of Highway 120 West here.
• Sonora Pass (Highway 108): This road to crosses the Sierra Nevada north of Yosemite National Park and is typically closed from the end of November until the end of May every year. Check the status of Highway 108 here.
• Monitor & Luther Pass (Highway 89): This road climbs the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada and goes through the town of Markleeville. It is typically closed every winter. Check the status of Highway 89 here.
• Ebbetts Pass (Highway 4): This road crosses the Sierra Nevada from near Markleeville to Angels Camp. It is typically closed every winter. Check the status of Highway 4 here.
• Carson Pass (Highway 88): This road crosses the Sierra Nevada from Gardnerville, Nevada to Jackson, California. It is typically closed every winter. Check the status of Highway 88 here.
• Echo Summit (US Route 50): This road crosses the Sierra Nevada along the south shore of Lake Tahoe. It can close periodically during severe winter weather, but is kept open as much as possible. Always check for chain controls. Check the status of Highway 50 here.
• Donner Pass (Interstate 80): This highway crosses the Sierra Nevada north of Lake Tahoe through the town of Truckee. Since it is a major shipping route it is typically kept open as much as possible, but severe winter weather can close it. Always check for chain controls. Check the status of Highway 80 here.

MONO BASIN AND NEARBY ROADS
• Highway 395: This highway is the main north-south road through the Eastern Sierra. It is almost always open, except during periods of heavy snow, avalanches, or high winds. Check the status of Highway 395 here.
Other Mono Basin and Eastern Sierra roads are open during the warm months of the year and closed during winter and cold spring conditions:
• Tioga Pass (Highway 120 West): This road through Yosemite National Park is typically closed from the end of November until the end of May every year. Check the status of Highway 120 West here.
• Highway 120 East: This road to Benton, California is typically closed every winter. Check the status of Highway 120 East here.
• June Lake Loop (Highway 158): The loop is typically closed every winter from the Rush Creek power plant to the north intersection with Highway 395. The south entrance of the loop is kept open in the winter so people can access the town of June Lake. Check the status of Highway 158 here.
• Bodie Road (Highway 270): This ten-mile-long road (easternmost three miles are dirt) is closed to cars every winter. Snowmobiles, skiers, and snowshoers can use the road to access Bodie during the cold months of the year. In the spring the road can sometimes be snow-free but closed to traffic because of muddy conditions. Check the status of Highway 270 here.
• Hawthorne Road (Highway 167): This road to Hawthorne, Nevada is almost always open, except during heavy snows and high winds. Check the status of Highway 167 here.
• Highway 203: This road to the town of Mammoth Lakes is almost always open to town and farther up the ridge to Mammoth Mountain Ski Area's Main Lodge. During severe winter weather it can close occasionally. Check the status of Highway 203 here.
• South Tufa: This spectacular location is located on the south shore of Mono Lake off of Highway 120 East. The dirt road from the highway to the parking lot is open during the spring, summer, and fall, and is not plowed reliably in the winter. There is a $3 per person fee at South Tufa.
• Panum Crater: Access Panum Crater off of Highway 120 East. The dirt road may not be plowed in the winter.
• County Park: Access County Park at all times of the year by turning onto Cememtary Road off of Highway 395 five miles north of the town of Lee Vining.
• Old Marina: Access Old Marina any time of the year by turning into the parking lot off of Highway 395 just one mile north of the town of Lee Vining. There is a $3 per car parking fee at Old Marina.
• Saddlebag Lake: This road off of Highway 120 West is typically closed every winter. |
