A Shared Planet: New Mono Lake Committee gallery show

As summer stretches into the cooler nights of fall, we are celebrating the changing of the season with a fresh gallery show at the Mono Lake Committee Information Center & Bookstore. The new show, titled A Shared Planet, features the woodcut art of Millie Whipplesmith Plank.

“Phalarope Flight” by Millie Whipplesmith Plank.

The show is an exploration of the natural world through the detailed and thoughtful art of woodcutting.

Millie’s work explores the fragility and wonder of species interdependencies and is distinguished by its ability to convey both the grandeur and the intimacy of the natural world. The beautiful individual nature of each woodcut is the result of being hand inked and rolled through an etching press. The exhibit offers an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of nature through the lens of art and to consider the ways in which we can all contribute to the preservation of our environment.

Working with conservation agencies that protect diverse ecosystems, Millie creates woodcuts that focus on a particular issue or at-risk species. The images she has created fundraise for conservation organizations, including the Siskiyou Land Trust, Smith River Alliance, Point Blue Conservation Science, Scott River Watershed, and the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy.

Millie created a piece called Phalarope Flight specifically to capture the tufa towers and water of Mono Lake, as well as the bird life the lake supports. Millie will donate 10% of the sale of each unframed print of Phalarope Flight to the Mono Lake Committee.

We invite the community to visit the gallery and experience this unique show. We will be hosting an artist’s reception for this show on Friday, September 6, 4:30–6:30pm. Join us for refreshments and an opportunity to meet Millie.
