About the book:
“In the 1970s the saline and alkaline Mono Lake in the eastern Sierra of California is noticeably fading away, due to evaporation and the diversion of its incoming creek waters by the city of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP).
“The effects are appalling, dust storms are affecting the area because of winds blowing on the exposed lake beds, the number of flies and shrimp in the lake are declining from this increased salinity, and the migratory birds relying on them for food are suffering.
“A monkey-wrenching group of friends come together to develop a grassroots movement to publicize the damage done to the ecosystem of the lake.
“Political and legal action to save the lake lies in the future.”
Duncan, originally from the town of Cheddar in England (origin of the cheese), is a current resident of the Eastern Sierra, who often leads interpretive tours at Bodie State Historic Park and areas around the Mono Basin.
This event takes place on Wednesday, September 2 at 4:00pm at the Mono Lake Committee Information Center & Bookstore. It is free and open to the public; light snacks and refreshments will be provided. No RSVP is required.
