WRD supports Outdoor Education at Mono Lake

The Water Replenishment District of Southern California (WRD) has committed $10,000 to underwrite transportation and scholarships for more students to participate in Mono Lake Committee’s Outdoor Experience Program (OE). Thanks to WRD’s support, more students will be able to experience Mono Lake and see how solutions work in balancing the water needs of people and their watersheds. OE is (more…)

It’s really raining

It’s raining hard at this very moment in Lee Vining. We can hear it on the roof here in the office, and it’s all puddles outside in the garden. Looking out across the lake there’s mist hanging in the air, and I can just see the east shore hills in outline on the horizon.

EPA video features rain gardens

The US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Botanic Garden produced this nine-minute online video, “Reduce Runoff: Slow It Down, Spread It Out, Soak It In,” that highlights green techniques such as rain gardens, green roofs and rain barrels to help manage stormwater runoff. (more…)

State budget standstill damaging Sierra

A new survey from our friends at the Sierra Nevada Alliance shows the ongoing state budget wrangling is stymieing important work at more than half the conservation groups in the Sierra. Staff have been laid off at a quarter of the groups surveyed.

Wilderness legislation advancing

Word is that an omnibus federal lands bill is advancing that incorporates wilderness designation in the Eastern Sierra. This includes federal lands in areas west and east of Mono Lake. Stay tuned!
