Join a naturalist-guide for a walk among strange tufa towers, bubbling springs, birds, wildlife, brine shrimp, and the behind-the-scenes story of the most unusual lake in California. This guided, one-hour walk includes hands-on activities, and an overview of the human and natural history of Mono Lake appropriate for all age levels.

Directions to South Tufa

From Highway 395 turn onto Highway 120 East (located five miles south of Lee Vining and 25 miles north of Mammoth Lakes). Follow the signs for South Tufa. Drive five miles on Highway 120 East and turn left at the sign for South Tufa. Continue straight onto a one-mile-long gravel road and park in the South Tufa parking lot.

What to bring

Since there is little shade at South Tufa, please bring sun protection (sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses) and plenty of drinking water.
