8. The Committee’s Outdoor Experiences Program turns 15

The Committee’s Outdoor Experiences (OE) program connects Los Angeles youth with the source of their water through week-long programs at Mono Lake that focus on science and hands-on learning. With a combination of curriculum-based education, outdoor recreation, and stewardship projects, the OE program teaches participants about natural and urban watersheds and ways that human activities can negatively or positively impact them.

The program was started 15 years ago when the Mothers of East Los Angeles, a community group installing low flush toilets in their neighborhood, physically connected the dots between their water conservation work and Mono Lake. Run on a shoestring and a lot of love, this program continues to reach hundreds of students with important messages about watershed awareness and personal responsibility. For winning the most important advocates we can think of, the water leaders of tomorrow, the Outdoor Experiences program is number eight in the Mono Lake Top Ten from 2008.
