Video: State park closure documentary

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011 by Morgan, Policy Coordinator

Check out the trailer for The First 70, a new documentary showcasing the 70 California state parks marked for closure.

Last May, California announced plans to close 70 of their 278 parks, including Mono Lake, a devastating move that is intended to save the state a mere $22 million per year. The closure list (more…)

Tioga Pass is open and the drive is spectacular

Monday, November 28th, 2011 by Arya, Communications Director

Highway 120 up and over Tioga Pass is currently open! It’s not too late for a visit to the Mono Basin from the west side, or for a trip to the high country before the big snow comes. This week’s forecast looks mostly clear and chilly—a great combination for getting out and about.

We always recommend checking road and weather conditions before you travel. For information on the Tioga Pass road, you can call: (800) GAS-ROAD or (209) 372-0200 or visit the regional road conditions page here. For weather conditions, check here.

The road is generally clear, though (more…)

Watch The Mono Lake Story official trailer

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011 by Elin, Communications Coordinator

Since the news that The Mono Lake Story film was accepted into the Wild & Scenic Film Festival, Bristlecone Media has been hard at work putting together an official trailer to promote the film. We love this beautiful condensed version of the 27-minute film, and we hope it will make everyone want to see more!

Bristlecone Media also put together a snazzy dedicated website for The Mono Lake Story. In a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the filming process you can see a photograph of Jonah Matthewson capturing poconip—the Mono Basin’s unique freezing fog—from a precipice near Conway Summit! Check it out here.

Tioga Pass is open

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011 by Elin, Communications Coordinator

An early-November snowstorm dropped nearly a foot of snow at high elevations, closing Highway 120 west—Tioga Pass—for several weeks. But Tioga Pass reopened again today at noon, allowing travelers to visit the eastern and northern parts of Yosemite National Park and cross the Sierra Nevada mountain range via this southerly route.

Two other routes across the Sierra remain closed: Highway 108 (Sonora Pass) and Highway 4 (Ebbetts Pass). Highways 88, 89, and 50 are open, but Highway 50 is subject to construction delays. Remember to check weather forecasts and road conditions before beginning your trip.

Eared Grebe rescue mission a success

Sunday, November 13th, 2011 by Morgan, Policy Coordinator

Early in the afternoon of 11-11-11, our friends Nancy and Ramona discovered the first Eared Grebe in town. Each fall Mono Lake harbors between 500,000 and two million Eared Grebes, which come to fatten up on brine shrimp and alkali flies before heading south to the Salton Sea and the Gulf of California for the winter. So seeing an Eared Grebe at Mono Lake is not news, but this grebe was not out on the lake, it was sitting calmly on the slick, wet pavement at Murphey’s Motel (more…)
