Sunrise light on a grove of tufa towers emerging from the water of Mono Lake with soft green and dusty-red wild grasses in the foreground, Canada geese in the shallow water with reflections of the rocky towers, and desert hills in the distance.

New Year’s resolution: read more poetry

This post was written by Barbara Ball, 2014 Information Center & Bookstore Manager.

Mary Oliver has done it again with her latest book of poems, Blue Horses. Poems as beautiful, haunting and accessible as a view of Eastern Sierra mountains after new snow. Poems that light up your soul like a spectacular sunset at Mono Lake.

From What I Can Do, describing the bewilderment of technology, to The Wasp, which details a surprise encounter with one in her bed, Oliver’s poems are moving, accessible, thought-provoking, and at times hilarious. As I read, I would smile and find myself sometimes nodding with new understanding.

If you aren’t already a Mary Oliver fan, you can read one of her poems, August, on the Poetry Foundation’s website. If you’d like to purchase Blue Horses and delve into its many gifts, it is available both in person and online at the Mono Lake Committee store. We also sell (and love!) two of Mary Oliver’s other books: Dog Songs and A Thousand Mornings.

A possible new year’s resolution: read more poetry. Mary Oliver could be your introduction—give it a try!
