At this time the highway is closed from the north junction of State Route 120 (the Tioga Road) to the junction of State Route 167 (the turnoff to Hawthorne NV and Lundy Canyon). Periodic closing of Highway 395 in both directions should be expected.

Fire crews have responded to the fire with engines, aircraft, and a dozer, and additional resources are en route. The fire was estimated at 200 acres at 9am today. The cause of the fire is unknown.

It is currently sunny and in the 80s with winds around 15 miles per hour from the west/north-west. The slopes in that area are predominantly pinyon/sagebrush scrub, and conditions are very dry. The air in town is smokey.

We will keep you updated on the fire in the Mono Lake Committee Information Center & Bookstore and online here as well as on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Caltrans posts updated road information here.

    • Sure thing Larry — it sounds like they’re getting things under control, and that they’re letting folks through on 395 via escort. There are still some flames high up on the south side of the burn, but the firefighters and planes are on it. Nice to hear from you even in this circumstance!
