Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve boardwalk replacement planned for spring 2027

Construction on the State Reserve boardwalk below Mono Lake County Park began in August with a State Parks crew installing “diamond piers” that provide the foundation for the new, replacement boardwalk. The piers are small structures secured by metal posts, which eliminate the need for pouring a concrete footing in the sensitive wetland habitat.

Delivery of the boardwalk materials is unfortunately delayed and State Parks is now planning to construct and install the boardwalk sections in spring 2027 with the grand reopening tentatively planned for the summer. Prior to the installation of the piers, Mono County Recreation Stewards worked to clear the boardwalk trail of invasive weeds and new willow growth since last year’s fire. This work helped to expedite State Parks’ launch of the boardwalk installation.

The Inn Fire destroyed the State Reserve boardwalk in May 2025 (see Fall 2025 Mono Lake Newsletter), and the replacement of the boardwalk has been a collaborative eff ort between State Parks, Mono County, the Mono Lake Committee, and a large number of volunteers that helped remove the burned boardwalk in July 2025.
