Atmospheric river brings approximately six inches of water to Mono Lake so far

Mono Lake Committee hydrologists estimate that the series of atmospheric river storms we’ve been experiencing over the last week has brought enough water to the Mono Basin to raise Mono Lake by six inches.

As reported in the Los Angeles Times, this lake level rise is very good news for the Mono Lake ecosystem, and it also means that some water will flow south to Los Angeles in 2017. Before these storms, the lake was low enough that it was looking likely that no water exports would be allowed.

As Committee Executive Director Geoff McQuilkin says in today’s LA Times video, “This event is going to keep the lake protected and it’s going to keep that water flowing to the city.” Thanks, atmospheric river—that’s a win-win!

April 1 Mono Lake level close to critically low threshold

This morning Mono Lake Committee staff met with Los Angeles Department of Water & Power (DWP) personnel to conduct the official annual April 1 reading of the lake level together. The consensus: Mono Lake stands at 6378.11 feet above sea level.

Mono Lake is now just 13 inches above the ecologically precipitous 6377-foot elevation at which the nesting islands become landbridged, lake salinity hits new highs, air quality problems worsen, and stream delta habitat conditions degrade.

Measuring Mono Lake's April 1 elevation

With those concerns in mind, the State Water Board rules are more nuanced this year for determining whether or not DWP can export water to Los Angeles. Not only does the lake have to be above 6377 feet for today’s measurement, it also has to be forecast to stay above 6377 every day of the coming year. (more…)

This year, for Giving Tuesday at Mono Lake …

… we wanted to send out a happy snapshot and a quote from the writings of Mono Lake Committee Co-founder David Gaines.

Mono Lake can teach us to listen, to watch, to live quietly, to see the world anew. -- David Gaines

Totally honestly, we’re a bit on the fence about Giving Tuesday ourselves. Is it just hype? Another bit of chaos to add to the holiday season? Does it do any good? What we’re not on the fence about is sharing our love for this place and the Mono Lake Committee members who make the work to protect and restore it possible, every day. So, we’ll go with that, and the simple reminder that we’re out here feeling thankful for your support, in all the beautiful ways you choose to show it. And, as always, we’re sending you best wishes from Mono Lake. #givingtuesday
