Action Alert: Write a letter by March 24 to help Mono Lake

The deadline to submit your comment letter to the State Water Board on the recent Mono Lake public workshop is fast approaching. Comment letters are due to the State Water Board at 4:00pm PDT on Friday, March 24, 2023. Mono Lake Committee members and supporters have already sent in more than 1,400 letters and we want to be sure that all voices are heard.

Letters written to the Board will show how important Mono Lake is to many people, and will be part of the public record on this issue. You can personalize and submit an electronic letter here—the more letters the Board receives, the better.

Despite this year’s wet winter, Mono Lake’s surface elevation is so low that an intervention is needed. The Mono Lake Committee is asking the State Water Board to suspend water diversions until the lake rises enough to protect wildlife and the ecosystem, and to quickly schedule a hearing to implement long-term stream diversion changes to ensure Mono Lake can rise to the healthy sustainable level mandated by the Board in 1994.

We will keep you informed on the Board’s next steps, including what management actions the Board takes following the workshop and comment period. Thank you for being vigilant with us and ready to speak up for Mono Lake at a moment’s notice.
